This is a simple game of chess using the SRPG Studio engine made by SapphireSoft.
The game has one single-player mode, where the player always controls the white pieces.

Most of the game is made by me (Goinza), but the music is made by Alquimia (https://soundcloud.com/user-449899893) and the tileset used for the chess board was taken from an asset pack sold by PVGames (https://pvgames.itch.io/pvgames-sci-fi)

Some feedback from a friend who is being prodded to seek an alternative chess AI to play against:
1) Pawn promotions do not work for the player, but they do for the AI. I was able to get White Pawns to the back row multiple times, but they did not promote. However, Black Pawns reaching my back row did promote.
2) Draws by Repetition are not a thing in this rendition of chess. Normally, after four turns of the same time-wasting maneuvers, the game is declared a draw. This is to avoid both players' precious time being wasted in an unwinnable situation.
3) While an innate part of SRPG Studio, it might be worth considering that the idle animation of the character chips is distracting for users not familiar with the engine. My friend suggests making the animation loop hold longer on each frame (this can be done by editing the unit counter object in utility-counter.js), and including an option to simply turn off the animation. The latter can be done with a plugin editing the same object.
Overall, Penny and I had fun playing - with her relaying instructions to me, and me trying not to mess up as someone who knows nothing about Chess - but we ultimately lost a match we definitely had locked down because our pawns couldn't promote.
If this feature alone could be fixed, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks for your feedback! To answer each point:
1) I didn't realize that the white promotion was not working, I guess something broke between my last test of that part and the current release.
2) This is something I didn't thought at the time, and considering how the code handles the game, I doubt it could be added, because the game doesn't keep track of the movements history.
3) Making the animations optional is a nice idea!
The thing about this project is that it was made for a jam in 2020, so I never thought about keeping the support for it. Also, currently I don't have the code for the game in my pc (hopefully it is located in some hard drive backup).
So I can't make any promises of improving it, but if I have the time (and I actually find the source code) I'll try to at least fix the white pawn promotion bug.
Again, thanks for playing it and for providing feedback!
I'm familiar with the jam - I also took part :> I understand not having the source code anymore, though. I don't have it for The First Heist, either, and would have to remake it from scratch if I received feedback on that.
It's still a fun game! I do want to empathize that Penny and I enjoyed ourselves. Well, as much as Penny can enjoy herself playing Chess, anyway :p But I had fun with it, and even won a match on my own just by testing out moves.
Thank you for taking the time to reply! :>
